How To Use A Facial Toner

Toners, also known as astringents, help to deeply cleanse skin by removing dead cells, excess oil and traces of soap and makeup. They are especially important for oily or acne-prone complexions, as they help reduce the likelihood of future breakouts. If you have oily skin, a concentrated, antibacterial formula such as Sea Clear™ Mattifying Toner is highly effective.

Toners have the added benefits of making pores appear smaller and giving skin a smoother texture. The general conception is that toners actually tighten pores. However, toners actually plump the skin, thereby minimizing the appearance of pores.

Although toners have earned a reputation for being drying in the past, the opposite is actually true. Toners are essential to properly treat dry skin, as they dissolve dull surface cells to clear the way for hydrating treatments. After toning, skin can absorb and retain a maximum amount of moisture.

The key is to look for an alcohol-free formula that contains soothing, anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as our Marine Toner. Also, never use toners around the eye area as they can irritate skin and sting the eyes.

Step-by-Step Guide
  1. Cleanse. Always apply toner to a cleansed face. First, rinse skin with lukewarm water. Then, apply a cleanser suited for your skin type. Massage formula in gentle, circular motions over your face and neck . Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel.
  2. Tone. Always use a clean cotton ball or cotton pad. Saturate the cotton pad with the toner sweep gently across the face and neck, avoiding the eyes. If you have combination skin you may apply toner only to your oiliest areas, which usually fall the T-zone.
  3. Moisturize. The best time to apply moisturizer is immediately after toning, as your skin is primed to receive the maximum benefits.
