Entrepreneur Cindy Melk dove into the deep end of the beauty business-now life is going swimmingly-by Jennifer Olvera
Cindy Melk is riding a wave of success, so to speak. Her H2O Plus beauty line, which the Gold Coast resident founded in 1989, is a $100 million internatonal business, with sales that have leapt 25 percent this year-despite the economic downturn.
The first skincare company in the world to focus exclusively on water-based, oil-free products, H2O Plus received significant backing from the Goldman-Sachs Urban Investment Group and Cordova, Smart & Williams last year, allowing Melk to take the company to the next level. Melk considers the new partnership an entrepreneur's dream. "They're not interested in running the business," she says, "but they have an amazing pedigree. [The deal] paved the way-both with funding and new international contacts-to do a lot more hiring."
Not surprisingly, Melk remains busy as ever. She now oversees the Chicago-based line as chief creative officer, using her degrees in design, advertising art, photography, and package design to work on everything frm the brand's avent-garde presentation to it's vibrantly colored skin treatments. Melk is also planning to launch upwards of 30 new formulations and technological advancements each year. While the line's central focus remains its naturally derived topical treatments containing a hydrating blend of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and marine algae, H2O Plus has expanded to also include high-tech skincare that they say anatomically manipulates skin from the inside out. "Right now peptides are hot," says Melk, adding that she'll be introducing electrode-equipped "power patches" for eyes next year. "It's an instant gratification product that reduces wrinkles and firms, lifts and brightens skin," she explains.
When she's off the clock, the mother of two enjoys sailing and visiting as many galleries, restaurant, bars, and boutiques as her schedule allows; she's even contemplating board positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art or the Art Institute of Chicago. "I've been thinking about getting active in the arts." she says.
Somehow we think she'll ride that wave pretty well too. |
